Exposure

Ambient romance envelops the rugged danger of the Olympic alpine region. Clouds suspend and move as mountain’s breath, ever-shifting between precipitation and a dream.

Exposure is an interpretation of the subalpine environment through the styling and design of a native subalpine fir. This literal interpretation with immediate references in the near, mid and distant vicinity highlight the tremendous depth to the Olympic mountain range. Delicate wildflowers grow from the cracks of sharp stone. Lush, cylindrical trees hold the dew of condensation, while nearby relatives lay deceased from the effects of exposure over time.

"It was only after each of those layers were explored on a sensory level that a depth of understanding emerged"

How literal would the interpretation be? And how would this interpretation become a part of the greater whole? To fully comprehend the effect of this complex ecosystem on the native trees, it was necessary to dissect the landscape on a macro and micro level. It was only after each of those layers were explored on a sensory level that a depth of understanding emerged, creating an intuitive collaboration with the elements.

"The influence of nature’s organization carries a lighter hand and softer touch–as if acquiescing to fate, the universe, or some other higher power. "

The informal and organic organization of the environment that played out in the work created an aesthetic that had not been realized yet in sculptures created within the built environment. Here, the influence of nature’s organization carries a lighter hand and softer touch–as if acquiescing to fate, the universe, or some other higher power.
